DA-9: ZamPen expects price drop on meat products in weeks to come

The Department of Agriculture (DA)-9 Regional Executive Director Rad Donn L. Cedeño announced that there will be decrease of meat prices in Zamboanga Peninsula (ZamPen) in two weeks’ time.

There have been reports of the increase of meat prices particularly pork meat in the past few weeks. DA-9 reported that this concern was due to the effect of African Swine Fever (ASF) which caused the decline in the supply especially that ZamPen also supplies meat in National Capital Region (NCR) and other regions in Visayas.

Other meat products like beef and chicken were also affected with the price increase due to the increase of consumption after the holiday season.

However, Dir. Cedeño affirmed that ZamPen is safe and free from ASF; and ZamPen is still continuously enhancing the supply and maintains the restriction in all boundaries through their biosecurity checkpoints to avoid the entry of ASF.

According to DA-9, 97 percent of hog raising in ZamPen are from backyard farming and only 3 percent are commercial.

“ASF brought an effect to the community and because of this, other hog raisers have fears to continue their hog raising business,” Dir. Cedeño explained.

Agriculture Secretary William Dar announced recently that they will implement a price ceiling for pork meat to avoid exploitation which will result to the decrease of prices.

“We will expect a decrease in two weeks’ time because of the price ceiling implementation,” clarified Dir. Cedeño.

Moreover, DA-9 provides long term solution to the hog raisers in ZamPen which is to continuously connect all hog raisers to the farmers’ association where they can provide the supply of food for the hog raisers in minimal cost of production.

“If the cost of production decreases, the harvest and earnings will increase,” Dir. Cedeño said.

DA-9 appeals to everyone especially those in urban areas to start or try urban and home gardening where they can plant vegetables and fruits as source of their supply especially in the time of pandemic.

Furthermore, Dir. Cedeño assures the residents of ZamPen that we have enough food and resources they can access. (EDT/MLE/PIA9-Zamboanga City)
