DSWD provides over P5-M financial
assistance to Pagadian tricycle drivers
As part of the national government’s assistance to vulnerable sectors of society affected by the adverse effects of Coronovirus Disease 2019 (Covid-19), the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) distributed more than P5-M financial assistance to tricycle drivers in Pagadian City.
Around 1,711 tricycle drivers received P3,000 each from DSWD during the celebration of the 14th anniversary of the Tricycle Operators and Drivers Association (TODA) held last January 14, this year at the covered court, city hall complex here.
Jed Jamolod, DSWD Assistant Secretary in his message urged tricycle drivers to observe road safety while driving their tricycles so as not to disrupt their daily livelihood activities.
“I urge you to practice road safety so that you can avoid accidents. Take care of yourself because you are the backbone of the city’s economy,” Jamolod said.
Mayor Samuel Co also welcomed the support shown by the Office of the President and Senator Bong Go by providing financial assistance to tricycle drivers, sending 86 bicycles, providing vitamins, face masks and face shields.
“I am pleased that the Office of the President and Senator Bong Go have helped release financial assistance to tricycle drivers who have been severely affected by the government’s enhanced community quarantine (ECQ) implementation to combat Covid-19,” Co said.
Co added that the plight of tricycle drivers was unfortunate when the national government implemented the ECQ because they had not been able to drive for three months so they had difficulty feeding their families as they have no daily income.
Co also encouraged tricycle drivers, who he called frontliners, to help the local government promote the city and its tourism to their passengers so that more tourists can come.
To make the occasion more meaningful and enjoyable, city councilors provided 150 bags of rice, free food packs as well as offered free hair cut to tricycle drivers.
The TODA day which is celebrated every 14th day of January every year, is one of the highlights of a week-long celebration event in the city’s annual parochial fiesta. (RVC/GCC/PIA9-Zamboanga del Sur)
