drive on COVID-19 vaccine roll-out

Information dissemination will play very vital on providing the public with the latest updates of the COVID-19 vaccines rollout in Zamboanga Peninsula (ZamPen), where the Philippine Information Agency (PIA)-9 as the head of the Strategic Communication (StratCom) cluster, is tasked to lead the information drive of the national and local government which will be rolled out to the ground through the Barangay Information Officers (BIOs).

During the 10th Joint Regional Inter-Agency Task Force – Regional Task Force (RIATF-RTF) Meeting recently, the body recognized the prominence of BIOs as information disseminators situated on the ground that will help the government inform and explain the importance of COVID-19 vaccines – as one mitigation to contain the spread of COVID-19 virus along with the adherence of the public health protocols.

“I am encouraging the national and local government agencies in the region to support the establishment of the Barangay Information Officers because we really need information disseminators on the ground,” affirmed RTF Chairperson and Office of the Civil Defense (OCD)-9 Regional Director Manuel Luis Ochotorena.

“They are really important especially when the start of the COVID-19 vaccines rollout in the region,” the Director added.

The PIA-9 also determined to fully establish all the Barangays with an Information Officer that will serve as government’s multipliers in the delivery of truthful, reliable, and timely information, specifically the COVID-19 vaccines roll-out to the public.

“They are valuable assets in information and dissemination undertaking from the government down to the grassroots level,” said by PIA-9 Regional Director Noemi B. Edaga.

Per the report of the Department of Health (DOH)-9, there are huge number of constituents in the region “were found afraid to be vaccinated and remain doubted with the efficacy of the COVID-19 vaccines”, cited by Medical Officer Dr. Mary Rose Rendon.

RTF Chairperson Ochotorena believed that a strategic communication should take place to embolden citizens to be COVID-19 vaccinated and ensure that safety is secured.

The aggressive organization and orientation of BIONs all over the region during the past months have already resulted and eventually organized the BIONs in all 98 Barangays of Zamboanga City, 45 BIONs organized both in Lamitan and Isabela City in Basilan Province, 210 BIONs in Zamboanga Del Sur, 60 BIONs in Zamboanga Del Norte, and 16 organized Municipal Information Officers Network (MIONs) in Zamboanga Sibugay.
