New Year’s Eve in Zamboanga Peninsula ‘generally peaceful’

The Police Regional Office-9 (PRO-9) said the New Year celebration in the entire Zamboanga Peninsula was generally peaceful as it recorded zero cases for stray bullet, indiscriminate firing and firecracker-related incidents during the revelries.

Brig. Gen. Ronaldo Genaro Ylagan, PRO-9 director, attributed the achievement to the intensified implementation of security and public safety campaign by the police across the region through its Ligtas Paskuhan 2020, a comprehensive plan to minimize crimes and incidents during the Yuletide season.

Based on the consolidated report “Ligtas Paskuhan 2020” of the PRO-9 operation center as of Jan. 1, it recorded negative incident of stray bullet, indiscriminate firing, and fire or burning incident due to firecrackers including major injuries in relation to use of firecrackers, according to Ylagan.

He attributed the achievement to the stepped- up implementation of Republic Act 7183 known as “An Act Regulating the Sale, Manufacture, Distribution and Use of Firecrackers and other Pyrotechnic Devices”.

A total of six illegal possession, use and sale of firecrackers incidents were registered in Zamboanga City and Ipil, Zamboanga Sibugay with more than 1,986 pieces and packs of assorted firecrackers amounting to PHP522,270 confiscated by the police.

Ylagan also said that not one among the 8,000 policemen under the PRO-9 were found to have fired a service firearm during the New Year’s Eve revelry.

Meanwhile, he acknowledged the support and cooperation of the general public throughout the region in the realization of a peaceful and injury-free New Year celebration.
